FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
An apprenticeship is a job with structured training. Apprentices work towards a nationally recognised qualification while gaining real-world experience in your business.
Apprentices must be paid at least the National Minimum Wage for apprentices. Training costs vary, but you may only be required to contribute up to 5%—or nothing at all—depending on the funding route available.
As the employer, you are responsible for funding the apprenticeship. However, this can be covered through:
Your Apprenticeship Levy (if applicable)
Government co-investment (95% government funded)
Levy gifting from another organisation
We guide you through the entire process—from choosing the right apprenticeship standard to securing funding, onboarding your apprentice, and coordinating with training providers.
Apprenticeships typically last 12 to 36 months, depending on the level and subject area.
Yes. Apprenticeships aren’t just for new hires. Existing staff can upskill through an apprenticeship, provided the training is relevant to their role and adds new knowledge or skills.
You’ll need to:
• Offer a genuine job with a contract of employment
• Provide support and on-the-job training
• Allow time for off-the-job training (minimum 6 hours per week)
• Work with us and support progress reviews
We help you register for the Apprenticeship Service and identify which funding option works for you: Levy, co-investment, or Levy gifting.
